Leinster v La Rochelle in the Champions Cup final: All you need to know

Here we go again.

For the third year in a row, Leinster's European fate comes down to a meeting with La Rochelle and Ronan O'Gara.

In each of the last two seasons Leo Cullen's side have come up short against La Rochelle; in 2021 they wilted under the French sun in their semi-final at Stade Marcel Deflandre, before a heartbreaking defeat in last year's final in Marseille.

While La Rochelle were deserved winners of last year's final, Leinster led for the majority of the game, and it was Arthur Retiere's try in the 79th minute, converted by Ihaia West, which gave the French side their first ever major trophy.

This year's rematch undoubtedly pits the two best teams in the competition together; La Rochelle have won 15 Champions Cup games in a row since losing the final to Toulouse in 2021, while Ronan O'Gara's side are the only team to have beaten Leinster across the last three seasons.

With both previous meetings of the teams in France, this time Leinster have home advantage to fall back on in the final, a fourth game in as many weeks for Leo Cullen's side at the Aviva Stadium.

Their long unbeaten run at the Aviva was finally broken last week, with their hopes of a URC and European double ended by Jack Crowley and Munster. That result has ramped up the pressure on the province, who have nothing to fall back on after this weekend.

It's a fifth star or nothing.

There are no major surprises in Leinster's starting side, 13 of whom played from the start in the 2022 final in Marseille.

Ross Byrne and Dan Sheehan are the two new faces in the XV, both of whom came off the bench 12 months ago.

James Lowe has recovered from a calf injury to take his place on the left wing, while Jimmy O'Brien, Robbie Henshaw and Jack Conan are the only players to keep their place in the team that were beaten by Munster a week ago.

Ronan O'Gara's La Rochelle have made two changes to the team that comfortably saw off Exeter in the semi-finals.

As expected, Jonathan Danty returns to the centre having missed the semi-final, with Jules Favre dropping to the bench.

The other change sees Paul Boudehent come into the back row to replace Ireland international Ultan Dillane, with the former Connacht man included among the replacements.

Leo Cullen (Leinster head coach): "Everyone's worked so hard to get to this point, so this is exactly the pressure we want. It's a privilege to be here and not something we take lightly.

"We've been knocking on the door in a few different finals which haven't gone our way, but it's about preparing the team as well as we possibly can, and now about delivering on the big day, committing to our plan, being nice and calm and composed."

Ronan O'Gara (La Rochelle director of rugby): "We're going in there tomorrow and we'll either grow or shrink. What I've seen from my boys is they love it, they care for each other, they've prepared all season for this game and it's to be attacked than be feared.

"As a player I would have been damn nervous, as a coach I'm extremely excited about it. Where else do you want to be? It's a Heineken Cup final in Dublin and we're ready to go?"

Finals weekend kicks off in Dublin on Friday night, with Glasgow Warriors taking on Toulon in the Challenge Cup decider at the Aviva Stadium, with kickoff at 8pm.
