Ireland Women have missed out on a semi-final spot at the Hong Kong Sevens after a 24-5 defeat to Australia.

The Irish side fell behind early in the quarter-final after a pair of tries from Charlotte Caslick either side of a Faith Nathan score.

Madison Ashby added another for the Australians before Vicki Elmes Kinlan scored a consolation try for Ireland, who now face a fifth-place play-off against France on Sunday.

Currently occupying fifth position in the World Series, Ireland remain on track for Paris 2024 but with Olympic hosts France occupying fourth place, the side would secure their place at the 2024 Games as things stand.

Ireland had got to the last-eight earlier on Saturday after a 34-0 win over Brazil.

After defeats to Fiji and Australia, the team, with Allan Temple-Jones taking over from Aiden McNulty earlier this week, ran in four tries against the Brazilians to complete their group phase, with Béibhinn Parsons and Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe touched down twice.

Meanwhile, after losing their opening pool to South Africa, Ireland Men bounced back to beat Kenya 26-14. However, they then lost out 26-7 to New Zealand and so did not make the quarter-finals.

They will now face Canada in the 9th place play-off at 1.30am (Irish time) on Sunday.
