Ireland's men's and women's 7s teams have both qualified for the World Cup in South Africa later this year after making it to the semi-finals of the Rugby Europe qualifying competition in Bucharest.

In the pool stages Ireland women eased to a 62-0 defeat of Wales on Saturday, a 27-0 win against Germany and then a 52-0 hammering of the Czech Republic.

That set up a quarter-final against Portugal, and with the last four guaranteed a World Cup spot, the stakes were high.

Aiden McNulty's side held their nerve to turn over the Portuguese and seal their place at September's World Cup in Cape Town. Sixteen teams will compete at the tournament over three days from 9 to 11 September.

Later on Sunday evening the men got the better of Georgia, 17-12, in a great game to march into the semis and also seal their place at the World Cup.

They had beaten Poland 73-0, Portugal 29-0 and Italy 21-5 in their pool.

The Ireland men competed at the 1993, 1997, 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2018 World Cups. They were beaten semi-finalists at the inaugural event, and finished ninth four years ago, winning the Challenge Trophy.

Currently fifth in the standings, they are set to achieve their best ever HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series finish when the campaign climaxes in Los Angeles next month.

The Ireland women, who had a historic fourth place finish in the series this season, will also head to Cape Town with big ambitions on the back of their best year ever on the global circuit.

Captain Lucy Mulhall and her team-mates have World Cup experience in their ranks from 2018. They finished sixth four years ago, beating England and Russia when they were ninth seeds.
