EPCR hoping to avoid further Champions Cup disruption

Travel restrictions led to five games being postponed in Round 2 of the Heineken Champions Cup

The organisers of the Heineken Champions Cup say the are hopeful Rounds 3 and 4 of the competition will go ahead as planned this month.

The EPCR were forced to postpone a number of matches in round 2 of the pool stages before Christmas, after heightened Covid-19 travel restrictions limited travel between France and the UK.

Unless exemptions are made for professional sport, those travel restrictions would further disrupt the games slated for next week.

European rugby's governing body are yet to announce when the postponed games will be rescheduled, with suggestions they may have to alter the structure of the competition for the second season in a row.

However, they say they are continuing to work with the relevant parties to ensure the pool stages can be played to a completion.

"EPCR is continuing to work with the leagues and unions to obtain assurances that travel exemptions for players, club staff and match officials will be in place for matches in Rounds 3 and 4 of the Heineken Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup," a spokesperson for the EPCR confirmed.

The travel restrictions won't apply to Irish teams, with Leinster set to host Montpellier in Round 3, after being forced to concede a 28-0 win to the French side in December following a Covid-19 outbreak which also led to their United Rugby Championship clash with Munster being postponed.
