Argentina second row Tomas Lavanini will miss Clermont's Champions Cup clash at Ulster next week following his red-card hit on Cian Healy in the Autumn Nations series.

Lavanini caught Healy in the face with a shoulder charge and was dismissed just before the hour mark in Ireland's 53-7 victory.

Lavanini told the independent disciplinary panel that he "accepted that he had committed an act of foul play, but not that it was worthy of a red card".

However, the panel upheld referee Matt Carley’s decision, saying "the contact was direct and carried a high degree of danger" and applied a mid-range suspension of six weeks, which covers two Champions Cup and three Top 14 matches.

The panel then took two weeks off the ban due to Lavanini’s "expression of remorse, his conduct at the hearing, and the fact that he has been taking active steps to ensure that his on-field aggression was appropriately controlled" but added one back on given the lock’s poor disciplinary record.

He has been sent off three times and picked up seven yellow cards playing for Argentina.

Lavanini may yet only miss four games as he has applied to take part in World Rugby’s 'Coaching Intervention Programme’, the organisation said this means he "may be able to substitute the final match of his sanction for a coaching intervention aimed at modifying specific techniques and technical issues that contributed to the foul play."
