It was another frustrating trip to Cardiff for Ireland as a winless run there since 2013 continued.

They led at half-time and had a real purple patch in the third quarter, but some terrible decision making from Peter O'Mahony in the first half, and Billy Burns in the second cost them dearly.

It leaves them staring a visit of the free-flowing French in the face knowing, another defeat would leave them battling for 4th place in this competition.

Here's how we rated the players.

Hugo Keenan - 6

A good performance from Keenan on his Six Nations debut.

There were positive moments - a fine early break down the left; a try-saving tackle out left just before Wales' second penalty; a mini break in the midfield on the half-hour mark; a try-saving tackle from on Leigh Halfpenny in the 58th minute.

He'll rue a poor kick after Ireland stole position from Wales at the start of the second half handed possession back to the hosts.

Keith Earls - 4

A bad day at the office for Earls. Hesitant under a high ball in the midfield led to him knocking it on in the run-up to Dan Lydiate’s injury.

Took Gareth Davies out in the air in the 56th minute. Kicked a ball, that had been outside the 22, out on the full shortly afterwards, which gave Wales a great attacking position. It eventually led, after a penalty, to Wales scoring their crucial second try.

Garry Ringrose - 6

Plenty of good carries throughout the 80 minutes. Kicked one out on the full shortly after the O’Mahony red card. Made a nice break on the half-hour mark.

Robbie Henshaw - 7

Looked sharp throughout. He did well to knock a poor pass backwards as Ireland attacked in the 33th minute. Made a great catch on the restart under pressure just after Ireland drew level in the 36th minute.

Made the break for Ireland's try, off-loading to Josh van der Flier. Came in from the side, after landing heavily on his back, as Ireland has a good phase of possession in the 54th minute.

James Lowe - 6

A brilliant kick from inside his own 22 immediately after the equalising penalty in the first half.

Caught out of position slightly for Wales' second try, but generally carried well and made some hard yards on his first appearance in the tournament.

Johnny Sexton (c) - 6

A tale of two halves for the Ireland number 10. A high tackle led to Wales' second penalty. Kicked three out of three in the first half.

Kicked one out on the full at the start of the second half after Ireland has stolen a ball from the Welsh maul. Missed touch with a penalty in the 68th minute as Ireland chased the game - was injured shortly afterwards.

Conor Murray - 5

Like many, he was better in the first half than the second. A poor kick inside the first five minutes of the second half with Ireland in a decent position - too far ahead for his own players to run on to. Gave away a cheap penalty in the 64th minute in an attempt to allow Lowe to catch the ball.

Cian Healy - 5

Did what was expected of him for nearly 52 minutes.

Rob Herring - 5

He did really well to prevent Justin Tipuric breaking through the Irish cover in the 43rd minute.

Andrew Porter - 5

Put in a solid shift for the 55 minutes he was on the park.

Tadhg Beirne - 7

One of Ireland's better players on a frustrating day in the Welsh capital. He claimed a 22 drop out superbly on the half hour mark. Finished smartly from close range for Ireland’s first try. Gave away a penalty in the 65th minute which saw Wales move two scores clear

James Ryan - 5

He went off for a HIA around the 25th minute and didn't return. Was doing his job up to that point.

Peter O’Mahony - 1

Came in from the side to give away the penalty for Wales’ first score. Was shown a straight red card for an, at best, poor attempt at clearing out. A first red card of his international career, and an afternoon to forget.

Josh van der Flier - 5

He was unlucky to knock on after James Ryan had stolen an early Welsh line out. Put in his usual amount of solid tackling throughout the afternoon.

CJ Stander - 6

Worked hard all afternoon with his moment of the match being his bundling over of Faletau on the hour mark.

Replacements:

Iain Henderson (for Ryan 25) - 6

He did really well to steal the ball in a maul just before half-time. Overall looked very solid after being called upon.

Billy Burns (for Henshaw 54 and Sexton 70) - 3

Was a HIA replacement for both Henshaw and Sexton. Kicked a penalty, but made three massive errors in the closing stages of the game.

Firstly he kicked the ball out on the full in the 76th minute as he tried to find Larmour on the wing. He then threw a pass behind his man as Ireland attacked late on, before that horror moment with the last kick of the game, failing to find touch from a penalty.

Dave Kilcoyne (for Healy 52) - 5

Carried well during his time on the pitch.

Tadgh Furlong (for Porter 54) - 5

Made it through a first game for Ireland in nearly 12 months.

Jordan Larmour (for Earls 62) - N/A

Jamison Gibson-Park (for Murray 73) - N/A

Ronan Kelleher (for Herring 73) - N/A
