Ulster have announced the signing of former Leinster out-half Ian Madigan on a one-year deal.

The versatile back, who can also play at centre and full-back, had 30 Ireland caps - including at the 2015 Rugby World Cup - to his name before leaving Leinster for Bordeaux Bègles in 2016.

He spent one season with the French side before joining English Premiership side Bristol.

However, the 30-year-old will return to Irish provincial soil with Ulster this summer as the province confirmed his arrival on a one-year contract, having agreed terms in February.

His decision to return to Ireland also means he will be eligible for international selection for the first time since 2016.

Ulster head coach Dan McFarland welcomed Madigan's arrival and highlighted the benefits he feels the Ireland cap will bring on and off the field.

"It's great news that Ian has chosen to make the move to Ulster for the upcoming season," he said.

"Given Ian’s skillset, and the fit it can have with our style of play, I’m confident he will be a valuable addition to our squad both on and off the pitch, where he will bring a bank of experience to a group of talented young out-halves.

"I look forward to welcoming him to our province."

The Dubliner who made his Leinster debut in 2009 won two Heineken Champions Cups and two Pro14 titles with his native province.
