Leinster ground out a narrow 3-0 victory over Zebre in their Guinness Pro14 match at Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi.

Ross Byrne scored the only points of the game from the penalty tee in the 19th minute as the defending champions edged the hard-fought match 3-0 in Parma.

Zebre hooker Marco Manfredi made a heroic effort in defence for the hosts, making 16 tackles to keep Leinster tryless.

"I'm trying to think back to a game I've been involved in whether the score has been a combined total of three points, admitted Leinster head coach Leo Cullen.

"It's four points in the league. We have a six-day turnaround now into Dragons so I think it's one of those games away from home where you try to focus on the odd positive that may have taken place and try to turn the page quite quickly.

"We had numerous chances in the first 20 minutes that we didn't capitalise on and they we went into our shells a little.

"It's a win and it's not a huge amount more than that. There's lot for us to improve upon."
