Ireland Women's 7s' Tokyo 2020 dreams are over after they fell to a 17-7 defeat to England in the quarter-final of the Rugby Europe Olympic Qualifier in Kazan on Sunday morning.

Stan McDowell's charges had finished second in their pool to set up a showdown with the English for a place in the semi-finals.

The stakes were huge. The overall winners of this tournament will gain a place at next year's Games, while second and third place in Kazan get one final chance to get there at next summer's World Repechage.

Finishing outside of the top three however would be the end of the road, and so Ireland knew they had to win to keep their ambitions alive.

Winning 7-5 at half-time however, the Irish couldn't kick on in the second half and ultimately suffered a 10-point loss.
