The IRFU today released a statement confirming an unnamed player has been sanctioned for an "incident of inappropriate behaviour".

The Irish Rugby Football Union would neither elaborate on the incident, nor the nature of the sanction.

The governing body for rugby in Ireland did state that the unidentified player has "expressed his deep regret" and apologised to "the individual involved".

The incident took place on 26 May 2019.

The statement in full can be read below.

"The IRFU have investigated an incident of inappropriate behaviour by a player which occurred on 26 May 2019.

"The player has expressed his deep regret and has been sanctioned in line with the provisions of his contract.

"The player has apologised to the individual involved. The IRFU, and the player, regret any upset that this incident has caused."
