Ronan O'Gara has been lined up for a return to the Top14 in a coaching role with La Rochelle, French media outlet L'Equipe is reporting.

The Challenge Cup finalists today confirmed the departure of backs coach Xavier Garbajosa.

Currently assistant coach with Super Rugby side Crusaders in New Zealand, O'Gara is set to take up a three-year-deal as backs coach with La Rochelle, where former Ulster coach Jono Gibbes is the director of rugby, L'Equipe reports.

O'Gara, 42, was assistant coach with Racing 92 from 2013 until 2018 before moving to the Crusaders.

The Super Rugby season finishes on 6 July.

The former Ireland out-half was recently linked to a role with the France national team for the World Cup but that didn't come to fruition, despite O'Gara indicating his willingness to listen to an offer.

Addressing the links, he said: "I had conversations with senior people in the [French Union] and I was interested in a detailed proposition, but the conversation never got to that point, to the bit where a specific role, working with specific people was on the table."
