Joe Schmidt has named his strongest team possible for the visit of France to the Aviva Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with CJ Stander and Garry Ringrose returning to the XV.

Stander missed the away wins over Scotland and Italy after suffering a facial injury in the opening-day defeat to England.

Josh van der Flier has been named in the back-row alongside the South Africa-born number 8, with Sean O'Brien missing out altogether.

"Josh has had less time than Sean and hasn't put a foot wrong," said Schmidt of the decision to omit the Lions flanker.

Centre Ringrose has recovered from a hamstring injury and takes his place alongside Bundee Aki.

The back three of Rob Kearney, Keith Earls and Jacob Stockdale will line-up behind the half-back pairing of Conor Murray and Johnny Sexton as expected.

Sean Cronin, the starting hooker in Rome two weeks ago, was not retained at the training camp so Rory Best will resume the captaincy, with Cian Healy also returning to the front row alongside Tadhg Furlong.

James Ryan forms a powerful second-row partnership with Iain Henderson, while Peter O'Mahony will slot in with Stander and Van der Flier.

The Munster trio of Niall Scannell, Dave Kilcoyne and John Ryan will provide front-row cover off the bench, while Ultan Dillane has edged ahead of Quinn Roux after a solid showing last time out. Tadhg Beirne was not considered due to fitness issues.

"Tadhg Beirne has been a little bit sore this week," said Schmidt.

"He was in the mix but he's going to get the weekend off [and] will come in back fresh next week. Ultan Dillane has played really well for us. The number of positive involvements he had was good."

After a positive outing against Scotland, Jack Conan missed the Italy game with an abdominal strain but keeps O'Brien off the panel.

John Cooney has fended off the return of Connacht scrum-half Kieran Marmion to retain his spot as back-up for Murray, with Jack Carty and Jordan Larmour offering out-half and backline cover.

The New Zealander added: "We were always going to spread the load which is different to what we've done in the past but we're a different brief this Six Nations."

Ireland: Rob Kearney, Keith Earls, Garry Ringrose, Bundee Aki, Jacob Stockdale, Johnny Sexton, Conor Murray; Cian Healy, Rory Best (capt), Tadhg Furlong, Iain Henderson, James Ryan, Peter O'Mahony, Josh van der Flier, CJ Stander.

Replacements: Niall Scannell, Dave Kilcoyne, John Ryan, Ultan Dillane, Jack Conan, John Cooney, Jack Carty, Jordan Larmour.
