A radical merger between Ospreys and Scarlets is on the cards ahead of a meeting of Welsh rugby's top brass on Tuesday.

Talks around 'Project Reset' – the system by which Welsh rugby will be run – have been held between the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and its four professional sides.

The survival of the Ospreys had been in doubt with the WRU determined to set up a new region in the north of the country.

However, such fears have now been allayed, and a merger with the Scarlets is now likely to come into the effect for the start of next season.

The merger, apparently, is the preferred option of the Professional Rugby Board in Wales.
