World Rugby have confirmed that they are exploring the proposed World League and they hope to deliver a competition model which would enhance the game.

The tournament would see the top nations face off in a global competition during the July and November windows.

"Following positive and productive meetings in Los Angeles last month with unions and competition owners, World Rugby has been tasked by its unions to continue exploring the viability of potential global competition formats," a World Rugby representative told RTÉ Sport.

"The objective of this exploratory work is to deliver a global competition product and commercial model that will deliver greater value and certainty to all unions by building on the strong foundations of existing competitions and invigorating the July and November windows.

"World Rugby is therefore focused on delivering a competition model that has the clear potential to enhance the international game for unions, players and fans."

At a meeting in January the green light was given by the Unions to World Rugby to continue to refine the model.

The proposed league has been criticised in some quarters however, with some worried that it will devalue competitions like the Six Nations and even the Rugby World Cup.
