Sevu Reece's move to Connacht is in doubt after the New Zealand-based player pleaded guilty to an assault charge on his girlfriend.
Fijian winger Reece, 21, was signed by Connacht in May, but was not due to arrive in Ireland until next month.
In court in New Zealand, he was fined but discharged without conviction after a domestic violence incident in which he left his girlfriend with injuries to her upper face, bruising to the left side of her waist and left knee.
A statement from the province read: "Connacht Rugby and the IRFU are aware of media reports concerning Sevu Reece and his recent court appearance.
"We are currently seeking to clarify information around the situation prior to commenting further on the matter."
Reece was the second-highest points scorer in the Mitre 10 Cup with Waikato this year.
