Ireland 17-12 Chile

Jimmy O'Brien galloped over with the final play of the game to snatch a dramatic victory for Ireland Men against Chile in their opening Rugby World Cup Sevens match in San Francisco.

A rollercoaster contest at AT&T Park could have gone either way, with the Chileans almost snatching a winner moments before O'Brien's breakaway.

But it's the Irish who march on to a round of 16 meeting with South Africa.

Chile struck just 20 seconds in when Pedro Verschae gobbled up a spilled kick-off and cut through a hole in the Irish defence.

Hugo Keenan struck back, holding off two tackles to dot down with four minutes to play in the opening half.

Captain Billy Dardis sidestepped his man to add a second try in the sixth minute and Ireland took a 12-5 lead into the break.

But the Chileans equalised in the tenth minute after Francisco Metuaze hared down the right wing and applied the finish.

With extra-time looming, O'Brien snatched it, exploiting space on the right to catch Chile cold and spark Irish celebrations.
