Ireland player ratings: Stander and Aki shine in series clincher

CJ Stander on the charge against the Wallabies
CJ Stander on the charge against the Wallabies

15 Rob Kearney 6/10

Saw a lot of ball kicked down his channel and dealt with most of what came his way and managed a couple of tasty offloads in the tackle. Fine work in the air to challenge the restart at the end of the first half, which resulted in an accidental offside from which Johnny Sexton booted the visitors into a 12-9 interval lead. Couldn't halt Marika Koroibete for his try as the Aussie winger side-stepped the flailing challenge to touch down and had a few shaky moments over the course of the game.

14 Keith Earls 7/10

Less involved with ball in hand than Jacob Stockdale on the opposite wing, with his first real moment to shine  Sexton's 20th minute cross-kick that had shades of Paris about it before he was stopped in his tracks. A day where the backs on both sides struggled for space, this was a more subdued outing for the Myross flyer.

13 Robbie Henshaw 7/10

Carried hard in midfield and was kept honest in his defensive duties, particularly in the second-half when the home side upped the tempo. Garry Ringrose's attacking nous was a loss, but the Leinster centre brought an edge to proceedings. Penalised for a high tackle which Foley could have pushed an on-top Australia into the lead with 14 minutes remaining.Three missed tackles will be a disappointment, but more than played his part in the win.

12 Bundee Aki 8.5/10

A 15th minute line break showed he has plenty of brain to accompany defensive brawn, but it is his work on the other side of the ball which has made him a firm favourite of Schmidt's. Superb chase on Sexton's raking kick in the opening minute of the second half to turn ball over and made 10 tackles over the 80 minutes, more than any other back. One of his best outings in the green jersey.

11 Jacob Stockdale 5.5/10

A real mixed day for the Ulster winger which added more to his reputation as an offensive weapon and defensively suspect at times. Looked Ireland's most dangerous back before he was sent to the sin bin after leading with the elbow as he tried to fend off the challenge of scrum-half Nick Phipps. Shot up off the defensive line for Marika Koroibete's try and his attempted tackle at the death came in for TMO scrutiny to see if there was a "clear and deliberate" knock-on as the Wallabies desperately sought a try. Ran for 71 metres which was more than anyone else on the pitch and the only man in green to muster a clean line break.

10 Johnny Sexton 8/10

Clear that the home side were looking to disrupt the play-maker with an early, late, hit by Wallaby prop Sekope Kepu. Kept the scoreboard ticking over from the tee before shipping another big tackle, this time legitemately, from centre Samu Kerevi in the closing stages, but refused to yield, moments later carrying hard to the line in the lead-up to his fifth and final penalty. Comes into his own with the game in the melting pot.

9 Conor Murray 7.5/10

In his fourth Test outing against the Wallabies, went closest to the opening try before the break when he attempted to dive down at the post with the ball. Missed a long-range first-half penalty and had plenty of defensive duties after the break.

1 Jack McGrath 7/10

There were a couple of messy scrums as referee Pascal Gauzerre left players on both sides frustrated at times with some of his calls. Excellent defensive work and eight tackles to his name before he departed shortly before the hour mark.

2 Niall Scannell 7/10

A late replacement for Seán Cronin, the hooker got off to an iffy start. The first throw went awry and the second was stolen, but was another willing carrier while the scrum was under pressure.

3 Tadhg Furlong 8.5/10

As per usual, kept up his end of the bargain in the tight exchanges and had a few big carries in the first-half to put the visitors on the front foot. Another whose work around the breakdown is relentless.

4 Devin Toner 7/10

Prominent at the air and was an assured, if a more understated lock, than his partner James Ryan. Conceded one turnover but otherwise a solid day's work.

5 James Ryan 8/10

The work-rate again was evident throughout the contest, flying into tackles - only Jack Conan made more than his 13 on the day - and quick to clear out Wallabies at rucks. Another excellent showing in the second row.

6 CJ Stander 9/10

Eye-catching in the loose, bouncing would-be tacklers on a number of occasions. Worked hard at the breakdown to thwart the Aussies, appearing at a huge number of rucks and was the man with the final touch when the Irish pack powered over the line at the start of the second-half. His 26 metres of running was the highest tally of any forward on show.

7 Peter O Mahony 7/10

The captain took a heavy landing from the kick-off after an aerial clash with Isreal Folau, but was back to his feet immediately and involved with a turnover in the very first minute. On the half-hour mark he was involved in a very similar scenario contesting the ball when the Australian full-back appeared to drag him towards the ground which resulted in a yellow card for Folau and the Munster man leaving the pitch. Had been playing well up to that point and it meant neither team captain made it to half-time following Michael Hooper's early departure.

8 Jack Conan 7/10

In a rare chance to impress against tier one opposition, the Leinster man was up against David Pocock. The Aussie backrower had turned over the ball twice inside the opening 20 minutes, but the Leinster number 8 stuck to the task and was the game's top tackler (20) and grew into the absorbing clash.

Replacements

16 Rob Herring for Scannell (56 mins) 6.5/10

The scrum ahd its issues at times, but Herring tried manfully and made six tackles after his introduction.

17 Cian Healy for McGrath (56 mins) 6/10

Pinged in his first scrum involvement as the Australian replacements made their presence felt.

18 John Ryan for Furlong (67 mins) 6/10

Less time to impress compared to his fellow frontrow replacements, but didn't put a foot wrong

19 Tadhg Beirne for Stander (69 mins) 6/10

A second cap and a second win over Australia. A fine start to his Test career

20 Jordi Murphy for O'Mahony (31 mins) 7/10

Stepped into the breach more than able after O'Mahony's departure.

23 Jordan Larmour for Kearney (58 mins) 7/10

Fantastic high take after his introduction
