Rhys Webb looks to be off to Toulon

The Welsh Rugby Union has confirmed reports that Ospreys scrum-half Rhys Webb will depart when his current deal runs out at the end of the season.

Webb, who has 28 caps for Wales and won two British and Irish Lions caps on the 2017 tour to New Zealand, has made over 140 appearances for the Ospreys since his senior debut in 2007, and is widely reported to be on the brink of a move to Toulon.

"Whilst the news is disappointing there is an understanding that on occasion market forces will make this impractical," the WRU said in a statement today.

The 28-year-old's proposed move to France could hinder his international career as WRU's policy allows for the selection of only four players, that play for clubs outside Wales, to be included in the national team over the next two years.

"It's a huge wrench to be leaving the Ospreys after spending all of my playing career with the team," Webb said.

"I will continue to give the region everything I can to make sure we have the best season possible and I would like to conclude by saying a heartfelt thanks to everyone within the Region for helping me achieve my goals within rugby."

Webb, who made his Wales debut in 2012, joins a long list of players that have recently left the region including Dan Biggar, Liam Williams, Taulupe Faletau, George North and Jamie Roberts
