Iain Henderson scored Ireland's first try to help them to an early 10-0 lead over Australia in their meeting at the Aviva Stadium.
Keith Earls reacted best to a kick through from Simon Zebo to cause chaos in the Australian defence, drawing in men before laying off to the second row.
Henderson still had work to do to but managed to evade Australian scrum half Will Genia to touch down.
His Ulster teammate Paddy Jackson added the extras to extend the Irish lead to ten points.
