Pat Lam insists 'sweet music will return' for Connacht

Pat Lam has promised Connacht fans the "sweet music" of last season's glorious Pro12 triumph will return as the province prepares to turn up the volume.

The Westerners host unbeaten Ulster in the league this Friday night before French giants Toulouse come to the Sportsground for a Champions Cup blockbuster the following week.

Lam's men had a dismal start to the campaign as they seemed to suffer a title-winning hangover, but a 28-15 defeat of Edinburgh last Friday gave them a much-needed boost, and the head coach is confident they'll be humming to new tune in no time.

"It’s like an orchestra," he told RTÉ Sport at the launch of the European Champions Cup.

"We were playing sweet music, but we weren’t playing it until April, May. It took a lot of work.

"This year we had a new violinist, a new bass guitarist, a new drummer... so everyone has to work on their instruments to get our tuning right.

"We couldn’t ask for a better game going into the Champions Cup than playing Ulster at home

"We’ve just been a little bit out of tune... but when you hear an orchestra at its best it’s fantastic. All I can say is the sweet music will come back.

“We’re getting better every game. It has been a slow start for a number of reasons. But I’m always confident because I watch what these boys do every day. Everything we’re working on we’re getting better on."

Lam is relishing the chance to end Ulster's flawless start to the Pro12 season.

Les Kiss's outfit have won five games out of five but will face a rejuvenated Connacht side hellbent on taking some momentum into the Toulouse face-off.

“We couldn’t ask for a better game going into the Champions Cup than playing Ulster at home," added Lam.

"They’re top of the table, undefeated, so it’s a fantastic game for us where we have to at our best.

"Ulster are a star-studded team and they’re playing really well. If we’re not at our best we’re going to struggle. It’s big challenge, we understand that, but that brings out the best in Connacht."
