Stuart Lancaster may have been a surprise addition to the Leinster set-up but the ex-England boss is crystal clear about his role under head coach Leo Cullen.
Just a month ago, Leinster announced that the former England head coach had joined as a “senior coach”, amid some uncertainty as to what that title actually entailed.
And ahead of their Pro12 derby meeting with Munster on Saturday (Aviva Stadium 2.05pm), Lancaster has explained exactly where he stands in the Leinster hierarchy.
“Leo has the final call on selection,” said Lancaster, who has helped Leinster to three league wins out of four since joining.
“Leo deals with the club-country relationships, Leo would have the bigger picture on where the squad is going, recruitment and retention.
"Some people get wrapped up too much in titles."
“My job is to focus on the details of our attacking and defensive games and trying to improve all those components.
“What I’ve learned in my time as international coach is that the margins are very small and it’s often the attention to the small details that makes the biggest difference.
“That’s what I’m trying to bring, that added level of scrutiny in terms of training, and reviewing training and an understanding of why the small things really matter.
"Because in the big games if you concede a try in the first 5-10 minutes then sometimes it’s a long way back."
The 46-year-old, who left the England job after they failed to emerge from the pool stages of last year’s World Cup, also indicated that returning to a central role would appeal in the future.
“It’s nice to be able to get back and coach,” he said.
“That’s not to say in the future I might not gravitate back to a number one position but I’m certainly happy doing the job I’m doing at the moment.”
