Ruan Pienaar leads Ulster to Treviso triumph

Skipper Rob Herring touches down for Ulster

Ruan Pienaar led the way for Ulster against Treviso, scoring 12 points as they recorded a hard-fought Pro12 win in Italy.

The South African scrum-half is playing in his final season for the province, with an IRFU policy ruling out a contract extension both Ulster and the Springbok international wanted.

Luke Marshall’s early converted try and a penalty from Pienaar on the half-hour mark had the visitors 10-6 ahead at the break, Treviso keeping in touch with a pair of Tommaso Allan kicks.

Ulster gained a bit more breathing space when skipper Rob Herring went over at the back of a rolling maul 14 minutes after the restart.

With the Italians still reeling, centres Stuart Olding and Jacob Stockdale combined to put Pienaar away, with the number nine converting his own try to put 16 points between the sides.

Herring was sent to the bin on 67 minutes as Treviso sniffed a comeback but Ulster were able to absorb a late spell of pressure until deep in injury time when Tommaso Benvenuti went over for a consolation score.
