Quade Cooper called in to Aussie side for New Zealand tie

Australia fly-half Quade Cooper has been recalled to the starting lineup for Saturday's Rugby Championship clash against New Zealand after a raft of injuries to the inside backs forced coach Michael Cheika to shake up his backline.

Bernard Foley has been shunted to inside centre to accommodate Cooper after Matt Giteau (broken leg), Rob Horne (shoulder) and Matt Toomua (concussion) were all injured in the first game last week.

New Zealand blew the Wallabies off the field 42-8 last Saturday, with Giteau, Toomua and Horne all injured during the first half at Sydney's Olympic Stadium. Replacement scrum-half Nick Phipps was forced to play more than 40 minutes on the wing.

Foley has been Cheika's first-choice fly-half and the New Zealand-born Cooper has not appeared for the Wallabies since their 65-3 win over Uruguay at last year's World Cup.

Foley's hesitant performance in Sydney, where he took too much time to clear the ball and was harried by an aggressive New Zealand defence, however, also undoubtedly forced Cheika's hand.

Queensland Reds' Samu Kerevi has also replaced Tevita Kuridrani at centre after the ACT Brumbies player dropped numerous passes and failed to shut down the All Blacks midfield runners as they swept the ball across the park at high pace.

Scott Fardy also returns as starting blindside flanker, while Adam Coleman replaces Rob Simmons at lock.

The Wallabies must win the game at Wellington Regional Stadium to give themselves any hope of regaining the Bledisloe Cup for the first time since 2003.

The world champions only need to draw to retain the symbol of trans-Tasman supremacy. The third match is in Auckland on 22 October after the Rugby Championship ends.

Argentina will bid to avenge their defeat in South Africa five days ago with an unchanged team when the sides clash again in the Rugby Championship in Salta on Saturday.

Coach Daniel Hourcade's only change to the Pumas squad named by the Argentine Rugby Union on Thursday was on the bench with full-back/wing Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino, a veteran of two World Cups, replacing Ramiro Moyano.

Hourcade and his players were angry with themselves for letting slip a 10-point lead in the last 10 minutes of their tournament opener in Nelspruit last weekend which ended in a 30-23 defeat by the Springboks.

"We were left with the anger of the last match because we know we have a team to beat anyone," captain Agustin Creevy said. "Let's hope on Saturday we play well and get a victory."

Back row forward Juan Manuel Leguizamon, a veteran of three World Cups, will win his 70th Pumas cap.

The match will be played at the Estadio Padre Martearena in the northwestern Argentine city of Salta (kick-off 7.40pm Irish time).

Argentina: 15-Joaquin Tuculet, 14-Santiago Cordero, 13-Matias Orlando, 12-Juan Martin Hernandez, 11-Manuel Montero, 10-Nicolas Sanchez, 9-Martin Landajo, 8-Facundo Isa, 7-Juan Manuel Leguizamon, 6-Pablo Matera, 5-Tomas Lavanini, 4-Matias Alemanno, 3-Ramiro Herrera, 2-Agustin Creevy, 1-Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro

New Zealand coach Steve Hansen's plans to rejuvenate his squad ahead of the 2019 World Cup continued on Thursday with uncapped centre Anton Lienert-Brown named to make his Test debut.

The 21-year-old, called into the squad when Sonny Bill Williams ruptured his Achilles tendon at the Rio Olympics, replaces Ryan Crotty for the match.

"He had a very good Super (Rugby) season with strong performances throughout and we expect him to take the step up," Hansen said of Lienert-Brown's selection.

"We're really looking forward to seeing him play in the international arena."

Crotty sustained a head knock in the All Blacks' 42-8 victory over the Wallabies last week in Sydney, which has tested the side's midfield stocks with George Moala suffering a knee injury in the build-up to the match.

Charlie Ngatai was also not considered due to ongoing concussion symptoms.

Waikato Chiefs centre Seta Tamanivalu, who played two Tests in June but was not included in the original Rugby Championship squad, comes on to the bench.

Julian Savea returns on the left wing for the injured Waisake Naholo, while Ben Smith and Israel Dagg swap positions with Smith reverting to full-back and Dagg moving to the right wing.

Loosehead prop Joe Moody returns after recovering from a neck injury, while Dane Coles starts at hooker after he played more than 75 minutes last week while battling pain from a rib cartilage injury.

Auckland Blues hooker James Parsons, who played one Test in 2014, has also been brought on to the replacements bench after Nathan Harris suffered a season-ending knee injury and Codie Taylor was concussed in Sydney.

New Zealand: 15-Ben Smith, 14-Israel Dagg, 13-Malakai Fekitoa, 12-Anton Lienert-Brown, 11-Julian Savea, 10-Beauden Barrett, 9-Aaron Smith; 8-Kieran Read (captain), 7-Sam Cane, 6-Jerome Kaino, 5-Sam Whitelock, 4-Brodie Retallick, 3-Owen Franks, 2-Dane Coles, 1-Joe Moody.

Replacements: 16-James Parsons, 17-Wyatt Crockett, 18-Charlie Faumuina, 19-Liam Squire, 20-Ardie Savea, 21-TJ Perenara, 22-Aaron Cruden, 23-Seta Tamanivalu

South Africa's Tendai Mtawarira will equal two-time World Cup winner Os du Randt's record as most-capped prop for the Springboks after being named in the starting line-up.

Zimbabwe-born Mtawarira, affectionately known as "The Beast", a name chanted each time he touches the ball, will earn his 80th cap, having made his debut in 2008.

He will have a new front-row partner after Vincent Koch was drafted in by coach Allister Coetzee for the injured Julian Redelinghuys in what is the only change to the starting line-up from the side that defeated Argentina 30-23 in their championship opener in Nelspruit last weekend.

Lourens Adriaanse has been added as prop cover on the bench, while experienced flyhalf Morne Steyn also takes over from centre Juan de Jongh among the replacements.

"Vincent did very well when he came on as a replacement for Julian in Nelspruit, and he is rewarded with a starting berth," Coetzee said in statement from the South African Rugby Union on Wednesday.

"We expect them to try and put us under pressure with their tactical kicking. Morn is an experienced player with good kicking attributes, and he will provide an additional kicking cover for us."

New Bok coach Coetzee said he resisted more changes as tries to knit the side together after a patchy 2-1 home victory over Ireland in the June internationals and a wobbly opening win in the Rugby Championship last weekend.

"We will continue to build on our cohesion as a team. This is the first away Test for this side and we expect another huge battle against the Pumas," he said.

The Boks will continue with their preparations in Buenos Aires before flying out to Salta on Friday morning.
