Irish women's Olympic dreams over after Russia defeat

Ireland's women's sevens team will not be competing in the Rio Olympics after losing out to Russia in the semi-final's of the Dublin 7s Olympic qualifier tournament at UCD.

Russia impressively overcame Argentina in their quarter final and proved too strong for Ireland, winning 19-10.

Ireland had looked good going into the semi-final following their 38-0 quarter final win over Tunisia.

They lost senior international Niamh Brigg to a nasty looking knee injury early in that game, but recovered well and Lucy Mulhall ran in a try shortly afterwards, which she duly converted herself.

With a minute to go until half time Irish pressure on the Tunisian defence paid off when Ashleigh Baxter reacted well to a mistake to stretch the lead.

Alison Miller scored her fifth try of the weekend early in the second half to put the game to bed before Nicole Cronin and Stacey Flood crossed over.

Miller added another at the death to round out the game.

The tournament winners will qualify for the Olympics in Rio in August.
