VIDEO: Ian Nagle looking for fresh start with Leinster

Former Munster forward Ian Nagle’s desire for a “fresh start” led to him signing for Leinster after taking a break from the professional game.

The second row was man of the match when Munster beat Australia back in 2010 but only managed to make 29 appearances for the province.

Four years later he went to Newcastle Falcons on loan before surprisingly taking a sabbatical to focus on his studies.

Earlier this year, the 27-year-old returned to the pro game and has played four times for London Irish.

The lock was asked on RTÉ Sport’s Against the Head why he chose the Reds’ big rivals back home?

“I’d be somewhat worried that when I say ‘Why Leinster?’ it might sound like ‘Why not Munster?’ and it wouldn’t be like that at all,” he said.

“It’s about getting a fresh start and doing something new.

“Leinster is an Irish club, it has many of the best players in Ireland, it’s always at the later stages of competitions, competing for silverware.

“There are really good second rows there at the moment who are going to drive each other on, and hopefully I can put myself in the mix there and it just seems like a really exciting place to go.”

There was a general feeling in Irish rugby that Nagle, who trained with the Ireland squad in 2012, never reached his potential.

The former Cork Con player also revealed why he decided to step away from the professional game.

“[My appretite] probably did wane a bit.

"The best way I can describe it really is when you are excited about rugby and you’re playing well there’s a certain amount of free adrenaline.

“Maybe that was missing a little bit towards the end.

“In some games you play in there’s a little bit more significance or consequences as to how you perform and that kind of baseline of adrenaline wasn’t there.”

“From the outside it might have looked like a very dramatic decision but it wasn’t.”
