Munster's Anthony Foley: I just want to coach

Munster head coach Anthony Foley says he hasn’t spoken to incoming Director of Rugby Johan ‘Rassie’ Erasmus over his role for next season but simply wants to concentrate on coaching.

After a difficult season, Munster secured their qualification for next season’s Champions Cup with a 31-15 win over Scarlets at Thomond Park and Foley admitted it is crucial that the two-time European champions compete at the top level.

Speculation has mounted over the future of Foley since the province announced the signing of Erasmus, who will assume a hands-on coaching role.

Foley recently signed a 12-month extension to his current deal, but some observers have questioned whether he will remain in light of the South African’s arrival.

The 42-year-old says that while he hasn’t spoken to Eramus, he is keen to commit his future to his native province.

“I just want to coach and that’s hopefully what will happen,” Foley said.

“Until I’ve spoken to the man [Erasmus], until I’ve sat down and pressed flesh with him, you can’t really do anything.

“I’d like to be coaching here in 20 years’ time. I don’t have a desire to go anywhere else.

Foley said securing of a place in Europe’s premier competition was pleasing and is already looking forward to next season.

“It’s very important for us to be in Europe next year, and playing the top competitions,” he said.

“We still have ambitions of winning trophies again and making sure we’re in knock-out stages so it’s important for this group to make sure they are playing at the highest level possible.

“It wasn’t [a] perfect display but we won’t worry about that.”
