Anthony Foley hailed his side's "discipline" in a stormy Thomond Park as Munster began their European Champions Cup campaign with a dogged dismissal of Treviso.

Munster picked up a bonus-point victory against the Italians in a 32-7 victory that required more perspiration than inspiration, but Foley was quick to praise his sid's character in dreadful playng conditions.

"We’d be quite happy with the performance," Foley told RTÉ Sport. "I thought in the first half playing into those conditions, it was very difficult out there.

"I think our penalty count was four during the game. Our discipline was excellent. At times we tried to throw a couple of loose passes but that’s when you’re trying things. Andrew Conway was exceptional out there at full-back, well aided by the two wings. We're very happy with that performance in those conditions."

"The boys are going well at the moment as a group and we’ll just try to keep them going on that path."

Treviso made it difficult for the hosts in the wind and rain, and it took until the third quarter of the game before their resistance eventually buckled, with Simon Zebo crossing over five minutes from the end to wrap up the bonus point.

"Some of the kicks out there were a lottery," added Foley. "The ball was blowing off the tee and it’s not very easy for the kickers to kick with somebody holding the ball. We'd good patience out there.

"The boys are going well at the moment as a group and we’ll just try to keep them going on that path. We’ve a tough trip to Paris next Sunday and we need to figure out how we go about that now."

Captain CJ Stander chipped in with a try in a man-of-the-match performance, and he also acknowledged the Reds' spirit and discipline.

“I thought we played well into the wind," the South African said. "It was one of those games were the rain comes straight at you. There were a few kicks that almost went backwards.

"I just tried to lead the boys. They inspire me every week, we’re a band of brothers and we play the game to enjoy it. I’m enjoying captaining Munster, it’s a big honour and I’m very proud of it.”
