PODCAST: Beaten Ireland 'not pleasant to watch'

Ireland are regarded as playing a conservative style of rugby

Gary Moran (@garymoran66), Wes Liddy (@treatyfan) and Bernard Jackman (@bernardjackman) ask where Ireland's Rugby World Cup dream went wrong and look to the future for Irish rugby in the latest edition of The Rugby Show podcast.

In the wake of their last-eight exit, Jackman says Ireland are "not pleasant to watch," but fears their style may not change given their success in the Six Nations over the last two seasons.

Ireland's narrow-style was exposed by a fierce Argentina display in Cardiff that saw Los Pumas run out 43-20 winners and rip the Irish apart with their free-flowing, running rugby.

“I don’t think Ireland are pleasant to watch. Not from a coaching point of view, but as a fan of rugby. It’s a pretty attritional game. A lot of one-out rugby, a lot of recycling. A lot of scores from penalties.

“As a fan, Ireland could play more attractive rugby. But the results in our domestic competition, the Six Nations, which is a massive competition, and we don’t have a huge history of success in it, we’re getting a lot of results, playing the type of game we’re playing. And it's very effective.

“Could we be a little bit more expansive? Sure. I‘d like to see that. But it’s very difficult [to change style] when you’re generally winning."
