Joe Schmidt has said he hopes Ireland flanker Sean O’Brien will not face a ban over a punching incident that took place during Ireland’s clash with France.
Speculation began during Ireland’s sensational 24-9 victory over France that the back-rower could be in trouble with the citing committee after he clashed with France lock Pascal Pape.
The incident took place on the halfway line during the first half of the match. It saw O'Brien, who was after awarded man of the match, swing his arm at Pape, with the Frenchman going to ground briefly as a result.
Asked if he was concerned that the flanker might face a lengthy ban, Ireland head coach Schmidt said: “I truly hope not. He [O'Brien] was being held at the time, he swung, I don’t think he was looking directly at the player.
“It is not for me for to determine [but] it's not a closed fist. I’d be hopeful, but it’s not a decision for me. It’s hopefully not something that impacts on us. Considering the dressing room we have and the amount of injuries we have, we can’t afford to lose another player, particularly not one of Sean’s standing in the group.”
