Former Ireland international Girvan Dempsey has been appointed backs coach with Leinster for the next two seasons.

Dempsey replaces Richie Murphy, who is taking up a full time role with the IRFU.

The 82-time Ireland international has been Leinster Academy manager since November 2012, guiding the Leinster A side to back-to-back British and Irish Cup wins and has been serving as interim backs coach during the Rugby World Cup.

Tthe Terenure College man said: "I've really enjoyed the last few months and being involved with the senior team on a daily basis and I'm delighted that Leinster have offered me the role going forward.

"We have a busy schedule ahead of us and obviously there are challenges with so many of the lads being away at the World Cup but the players in the environment have applied themselves brilliantly and I think you saw that again on Saturday."

Dempsey also said he looks forward to working with some of the younger members of the senior panel who he has dealt with in his former role.

"I am hugely energised by the talent that is bubbling away behind the senior set up and I'm excited to continue that journey that began in the Academy with those lads into the senior set up."

Dempsey made 175 appearances for the province during his playing career before retiring in 2010.

Former Leinster out-half Murphy has been involved as a coach in the province's three Heineken Cup wins.

He is currently working with the national squad at the world cup and will take up a full-time role with the side following the tournament.
