Ireland international prop Jamie Hagan has joined Melbourne Rebels.

The tighthead, 28, previously played for Leinster, Connacht and London Irish and won an Ireland cap against the USA in 2013.

Hagan, who recently signed a short-term deal with Leinster to provide cover for their league games during the Rugby World Cup, will play with the Rebels until the end of the 2017 season.

Speaking about the move, he said: “Growing up in Ireland, I have always watched Super Rugby on a Saturday morning and it has always fascinated me.

“Now, after eight years playing professionally in Ireland and England, I have an amazing opportunity to move to Melbourne and play both with and against people of such a high calibre.

"It’s such an exciting tournament; the rugby is fast, furious and open, everything that rugby should be.”

The Rebels are managed by former Munster coach Tony McGahan, who said: “To be able to bring a front row player into the team with 100 caps at the professional level is a real positive for the improvement of the squad going forward into the 2016 season.

“Jamie is quality player and he has added to every environment he has been a part of."

Hagan becomes the second full Ireland international to play Super Rugby, Peter Clohessy played with the Queensland Reds in 1997.

The Rebels finished tenth of 15 teams in this year's league, which was won by the Highlanders at the start of the month.
