Wasps have announced the signing of Jimmy Gopperth from Leinster, with the outhalf to join the English Premiership club at the end of the season.

New Zealand-born Gopperth has made 45 appearances since joining Leinster at the start of last year from the Newcastle Falcons, scoring three tries and 280 points in that time.

With Jonathan Sexton due to return to Leinster next season, and fellow Ireland international Ian Madigan's contract running until the 2016, Gopperth’s prospects at Leinster looked limited, and the province confirmed last month that he was talking to other clubs.

Leinster Rugby Head Coach Matt O'Connor said he had been an “integral” part of the province’s environment over the past 18 months and that he would be missed.

“The experience he brought to the set-up from years playing with the Hurricanes and Blues in Super Rugby and then with the Falcons, cannot be underestimated,” O’Connor said.

"We are disappointed to lose a player of his calibre and experience but we understand his reasoning. At this stage in his career, he wants to be playing consistently and regularly.”

Gopperth said he playing with Leinster had been “a brilliant experience” and that he was looking forward to fighting on two fronts as Leinster continue their progress in thh Pro12 and Champions Cup.
