Jerry Sexton, younger brother of Johnny, made his debut for the Exeter Chiefs as the holders took a last-gasp victory over Gloucester in the LV= Cup.

Sexton, who plays as a second row and who is on a month-long trial with Exeter, played a full 80 minutes of rugby and saw a last-minute penalty try converted by fly-half Ceri Sweeney ensure Exeter snatched a one-point 28-27 victory over West Country rivals Gloucester.

Sweeney kicked three penalties and two conversions over all for Exeter, for whom Adam Hughes and Fetu'u Vainikolo bagged also five-pointers.

Aled Thomas also had his kicking boots on for Gloucester, slotting two penalties and three conversions, one of which was to his own try and two to those of Gareth Evans and Billy Meakes.

Gloucester had looked likely to take the win, but with less than three minutes remaining Exeter were causing the Cherry and Whites problems in the scrum and at the third reset referee Simon Harding awarded the Chiefs a penalty try. Sweeney's conversion gave Exeter victory.

Thomas had an opportunity to snatch the game but his penalty attempt from just inside the Chiefs half, close to the left touchline, hit the far upright and save the Chiefs' blushes.
