Eddie O'Sullivan has been appointed as the new coach of struggling French side Biarritz Olympique.

The French club have confirmed that O'Sullivan, who was in charge of Ireland from 2001 to 2008, will take charge at Parc des Sports Aguiléra and he is understood that have agreed a two-year contract with the club.

Biarritz turned to the Irish Triple Crown-winning coach after they were relegated from the French Top 14 league and he will be tasked with re-establishing them as a top-flight side next season.

The appointment comes as somewhat of a surprise as the former Ireland coach had been heavily linked with a move to Munster in recent days and was tipped to be named as the province's new backs coach.

In a statement on their official website, Biarritz claimed that their new coach turned down an offer from Munster in order to move to France.

O'Sullivan is expected to name his assistants in the coming days.
