Leinster Rugby chief executive Mick Dawson has indicated that Brian O’Driscoll will play for another season.
Speaking on 2fm’s Game On, Dawson said he was keen for the 34-year-old to continue his career after the Lions tour to Australia.
He said: “We are hopeful that Brian O’Driscoll will play for another year, and if that happens, it would complete our squad for the coming season.”
Asked if he would be contracted by the province, he replied: “No, I think it would be a national contract.”
Dawson added that Joe Schmidt, who was appointed as Ireland head coach last week and will leave Leinster after their Amlin Challenge Cup and RaboDirect PRO12 campaigns come to an end, will not be taking any of the European Champions’ coaching staff with him to the international set-up.
“My understanding is that our back-room staff will be in place,” Dawson said on the day that Matt O'Connor was confirmed as in-coming Leinster coach.
“They are all contracted to Leinster for next year. He might dip in at times, during the Six Nations or something like that but certainly I haven’t heard that he’s interested in any of them at the moment.”
