Stringer set to start for Barbarians

Munster scrum-half Peter Stringer has been selected to start for the Barbarians against Australia at Twickenham on Saturday.

The 98-times capped Ireland international has struggled to get game time for both province and country for much of the last two years.

He will start alongside former England out-half Danny Cipriani, who has also fallen out of favour at international level and is currently playing for Melbourne Rebels in Australia.

Stringer is the only Irish player in the Baa-baas' squad, which is coached by New Zealand’s Graham Henry.

The Barbarians starting XV also includes Wigan and England Rugby League star Sam Tomkins, who will play on the wing in what is described as a one-off appearance. Tomkins' brother Joel recently switched codes, moving from Wigan to Saracens.

South Africa’s Victor Matfield will captain the side from the second row. Keven Mealamu, Sylvain Marconnet, Simon Shaw and Jerome Kaino are among the other star names in the pack.
