Waratahs coach Chris Hickey expects winger Drew Mitchell will be ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a horrific leg injury in their Super 15 defeat to the Reds.

Early reports have suggested that Mitchell suffered a dislocated ankle and broken leg after he fell awkwardly chasing a loose ball in the 19-15 defeat.

Referee Steve Walsh stopped the game immediately and Mitchell had to be sedated before medical staff put his ankle back into place.

The World Cup begins in New Zealand on 9 September with Australia's first game against Italy two days later.
