New Zealand out-half Dan Carter is set to join French club Racing Metro after this year's Rugby World Cup according to a British newspaper.

The Daily Mail has reported that Carter will leave Canterbury Crusaders for Paris-based Racing in a three-year deal worth €4.5m.

Carter's agent, Simon Porter, told New Zealand journalists he had not seen the report and described it as speculation.

He added: 'He (Carter) is assessing his options and will make a decision soonish. He's the world's best rugby player, and there are lots of people including the NZRFU interested in him.'

Carter played for French side Perpigan two years ago but they were financially outgunned by Racing this time, according to the Mail.

The news follows yesterday criticism by New Zealand RFU Chief Executive Steve Tew of Ulster’s attempts to sign Jared Payne, John Afoa and Cory Jane.
