Aviva Stadium - first match fixed for 31 July

The IRFU has confirmed that the first game to be played at the Aviva Stadium will be the clash of combined Leinster/Ulster and Munster/Connacht sides on Saturday July 31.

Some reports have wrongly suggested that the first match at the new stadium would take place on August 7.

The IRFU added that the game is part of the provincial pre-season calendar and that Irish rugby ‘stakeholders’ will get the chance to attend the match.

Commenting on the announcement, IRFU Chief Executive Philip Browne said: 'This promises to be a great occasion to open the Aviva Stadium to the Irish rugby public.

The game will see involvement from both Leinster and Ulster, the sides who played the first and last fixtures at the old Lansdowne Road.

Browne added: 'It was felt that a combined provinces fixture would be the most appropriate way to do this, providing a look back into the history of the game while also creating a new chapter for Irish rugby.'

The new stadium will play host to international rugby for the first time in November with South Africa set to visit. The Springboks will face Ireland on November 6.

Ireland will then face Samoa, New Zealand and Argentina over the course of the rest of the Guinness Series.

The RBS 6 Nations follow in February and March 2011 with France and then England set to be the first visiting European teams.

The first soccer match at the stadium is due to take place on August 11 with the Republic of Ireland set to face Argentina.
