80 mins A sloppy line-out gives the hosts a last throw of the dice, but it's wasted as Pietersen kicks the ball downfield and Bowe, who had a quieter second half, kicks the ball to touch to end the game.

78 mins The home side throw everything they have left into a push down the middle, but a forward pass from Van Zyl gives the Lions the chance to kick the ball away to safety.

76 mins Hook claims his first points of the afternoon with a massive kick after the home side are penalised for collapsing a scrum. 23-26

73 mins This game has really sparked into life now and the Lions hold firm in the face of some serious pressure in their 22 to claim a scrum.

71 mins Ouch! Andy Powell lands a massive hit on Duane Vermeulen, and while he's, prehaps harshly, penalised for not using his arms, he's not sin-binned.

68 mins The Lions are rattled. Hook makes a mark inside his own 22 but a quick line-out leaves Monye in all kinds of trouble and Western Province swarm around him, the referee eventually awards the home side a scrum.

67 mins Rob Kearney leaves the pitch with what looks like a dead leg and his replacement James Hook is straight into the action as he attempts a long range penalty, which lacks the accuracy and strength and trails wide.

63 mins WESTERN PROVINCE - TRY And just like that the sides are level. Anton Van Zyl makes headway into the Lions 22 and although his run is eventually checked, the ball is spread out wide to Joe Pietersen who dives over. De Waal, who has been outstanding this afternoon, misses the kick but the Lions are under real pressure here. 23-23

59 mins WESTERN PROVINCE - PENALTY De Waal's kicking is keeping the hosts in this game. Williams, who did so well to power over for his try, is guilty of going into the ruck from the side and a penalty is the result. 18-23

55 mins LIONS - TRY Some patient pressure pays off. The Lions pack turn the screws waiting for the opening, which arrives when Martyn Williams finds a gap in the corner and bundles the ball over. Jones again misses the conversion 15-23

53 mins Lions starting to apply pressure now. Monye's powerful surge gets them inside the 22 but Western Province manage to scramble to touch.

49 mins De Waal's boot, which has been the main source of problems for the Lions this afternoon, again puts them under pressure as his kick gets them inside the visitors' 22. From the breakdown they kick a crossfield ball but the phase ends with a knock-on.

47 mins Dodgy call there as the Lions rush defence is called offside. Television replays prove that they were only guilty of being very, very fast, but regardless, De Waal claims the three points. 15-18

44 mins Sheridan is again guilty of giving away a soft penalty but kicking into the wind, De Waal's effort falls just short.

43 mins An ugly, untidy start to the half with the sides swapping possesion thanks to some poor kicking.

41 mins We're back underway, it'll be interesting to see if the Lions kick more this half with the blustery wind at their backs now. Their attempts to play through the Western Province defence was a feature of the first half.

HALF-TIME: Western Province 12-18 Lions

40 mins WESTERN PROVINCE - PENALTY The Lions give away an unnecessary penalty just before the half-time break as Andrew Sheridan is penalised at the bottom of the ruck. De Waal makes no mistake. 12-18

38 mins Play gets back underway with Gio Aplon replacing Chavhanga, whose involvement in the match looks to be over.

36 mins There's a break in play for Chavhanga to get treatment after he runs into the elbow of Rob Kearney, which gives us a chance to appreciate Bowe's play again - surely that's his Test place sealed.

34 mins LIONS - TRY Bowe takes the plaudits again. The Ospreys man comes inside from the right to support the attack as they probe down the opposite flank. Bowe explodes through the defensive line before his run is checked by Pietersen, but the Irishman has the presence of mind to loft the ball back to Monye who charges to the touchline. Jones makes the difficult conversion. 9-18

32 mins The hosts look to hit back immediately but again are let down by their indiscipline as Pieter Louw is penalised for going at the side as his side get within kicking distance.

29 mins LIONS - TRY The Lions finally come to life as Andy Powell powers through the centre before he offloads to Martyn Williams who in turn plays it out to Tommy Bowe on the right. The Irishman charges through two challenges before rolling over for the try. Jones misses the conversion. 9-11

27 mins WESTERN PROVINCE - DROP GOAL Tonderai Chavhanga does brilliantly to dive and take De Waal's crossfield kick. Ugo Monye comes steaming in and while Chavhanga avoids the worst of it, the referee awards the penalty, which is kicked into the corner. The hosts win the line-out and the ball is offloaded to Joe Pietersen who slots over the drop goal. 9-6

23 mins There's a look of uncertainty about the Lions with too many players not content to do the simple things. Maybe the thoughts of earning a place against South Africa are playing on some minds?

21 mins Kearney does well to take a sweet catch before skilfully evading a tackle only to negate his good work with a sloppy forward pass to Joe Worsley.

18 mins WESTERN PROVINCE - DROP GOAL We're all-square again. A powerful Western Province maul forces the Lions back to within shooting range and De Waal, with time and space, takes his chance to claim a neat drop goal. 6-6

13 mins Jones suffers his first miss of the afternoon and Western Province's indiscipline escapes punishment. Pieter Louw concedes a sloppy penalty near the halfway line, but while Jones' kick was on target, it lacked the power needed.

10 mins LIONS - PENALTY Jones enjoys a nice slice of luck as his wayward penalty from the 22 - awarded after an under-pressure Wicus Blaauw turns - hits the inside of the post and goes over. Western Province are already looking to be lacking in discipline. 3-6

6 mins LIONS - PENALTY Stephen Jones, desperate to impress and force his way ahead of Ronan O'Gara in the pecking order, levels up the scores with his penalty after Western Province are penalised for being offside. 3-3

3 mins WESTERN PROVINCE - PENALTY A scrappy enough opening sees the sides trade kicks, Rob Kearney's effort from deep right fails to find touch and the Lions find themselves offside and give up the first penalty of the afternoon, which Willem De Waal slots over with ease. 3-0

2.00pm Stephen Jones starts the match. Western Province collect and clear deep are unable to find the touchline.

1.59pm Vickery leads out his side onto a wet and wild Newlands pitch, it looks like the elements will have their part to play and may have been a factor in the numerous empty seat sprinkled around this historic stadium.

The Lions roadshow continues in Cape Town as the tourists take on Western Province. Ian McGeechan's men will be eager to continue their 100% start to the tour, and stake a claim for a starting place against South Africa.
