Australia full-back Billy Slater capped a brilliant season by being named the winner of the prestigious Golden Boot as international player of the year.

The Melbourne Storm star emerged from a group of eight nominees to win the award run by the Rugby League World magazine and considered the highest individual honour in the game.

He received his prize, along with the Australian Rugby League Players' Association's player-of-the-year award, at a ceremony in Sydney.

It capped a remarkable haul of trophies for Slater after he was named the inaugural Rugby League International Federation player of the year and World Cup player of the tournament earlier this month.

The latest honour will help ease the memory of Slater's mistake that gifted New Zealand stand-off Benji Marshall a crucial try in the Kangaroos' shock 34-20 World Cup final defeat by New Zealand in Brisbane.

Slater succeeds Melbourne team-mate Cameron Smith, while other previous winners include Wally Lewis, Brett Kenny, Ellery Hanley, Mal Meninga, Andrew Johns, Darren Lockyer and Andrew Farrell.

Lewis was on a panel of 12 rugby league writers and former internationals who determined the award.
