The New Zealand Rugby Union have stopped short of sacking troubled scrum-half Jimmy Cowan after finding him guilty of serious misconduct at a hearing in Wellington.

Instead, the 26-year-old has been fined, banned from drinking alcohol and told to seek alcohol counselling as condition of his ongoing employment.

Cowan is facing three charges of disorderly behaviour relating to two incidents in Dunedin and one in Invercargill between April and June this year.

The latest charge by Dunedin police was laid on Tuesday and relates to an incident in Dunedin during the Super 14 competition.

Cowan will now take his place on the All Blacks' bench for Saturday's Tri-Nations match against South Africa at Westpac Stadium.
