Kiwis claim the IRB Sevens Series

New Zealand pipped Fiji to the IRB Sevens World Series by two points

New Zealand claimed the IRB Sevens World Series title on a dramatic final day at Murrayfield.

The Kiwis went into the eighth and final event of the series 10 points adrift of Fiji in the standings, but their hopes were raised when Wales upset the Pacific islanders in the quarter-finals earlier today.

That meant New Zealand would take the title if they could win the tournament in Edinburgh - and they rarely looked like doing anything else.

After seeing off South Africa to set up a semi-final clash with Wales, the All Blacks were totally dominant as Dai Rees' men were swept aside 28-0 in a one-sided contest.

That left Samoa - who earlier beat Kenya and Argentina - as the last hurdle in the final, but they provided little more resistance than the Welsh.

Adam Thompson and DJ Forbes both scored a brace of tries, while Tomasi Cama and Afeleke Pelenise also crossed as New Zealand registered a thumping 34-5 win to seal the title.

After their defeat to Wales, Fiji bounced back to beat South Africa and Kenya to win the plate.

That gave them eight points for the tournament to New Zealand's 20 - meaning the Kiwis were champions by just two points.

England, who lost to Argentina and New Zealand in their pool yesterday, beat Canada 29-7 in their bowl quarter-final and then booked their place in the final with a thrilling 24-19 win over Australia.

There they thumped Portugal 31-0 to claim the bowl for a second year running, with the score given a slightly flattering look by Noah Cato's late brace.

Earlier today, Scotland's bid for a surprise semi-final spot in the main draw came to an end when they were beaten 22-10 by Argentina.

The Scots had thrilled their home crowd yesterday with a shock win over South Africa, but they had to settle for a place in the plate competition, where they lost out 19-17 to Kenya in the semi-finals.

France beat Russia 21-12 to win the shield competition for the sides who finished bottom of their pools.
