Former All Blacks winger Jonah Lomu has been linked with a switch to rugby league, media reported on Monday.
Lomu was reported to be close to signing for the Gold Coast Titans, a fledgling side in Australia's National Rugby League competition.
The Gold Coast Bulletin newspaper in Queensland reported that Lomu would meet Titans management on Tuesday to discuss a move.
The paper reported sources close to Lomu saying his switch to league was 'not a cash grab', but a genuine attempt to make an impact in the sport.
Titans management refused to confirm or deny the club was planning to meet the 31-year-old Lomu.
The possible switch of rugby codes follows Lomu's recent admission that his hopes of playing for New Zealand at next year's Rugby World Cup were over.
Lomu defied medical advice by making a comeback at first-class level in 2005, two years after a kidney transplant, in the hope of finishing his career at the World Cup.
However, he was unable to regain his old form as a series of injuries restricted his appearances.
Lomu became the youngest player to represent the All Blacks when he made his test debut in 1994 aged 19 and quickly established himself as the most exciting player of his generation, scoring 37 tries in 63 tests.
A giant winger with strength and pace to match his size, Lomu was the outstanding player at the 1995 World Cup in South Africa, single-handedly destroying England in the semi-finals with four tries.
He missed the 2003 World Cup in Australia after being forced to commence dialysis to his deteriorating kidney before undergoing a transplant in 2004.
If Lomu joined the Titans he would be the club's second big-name signing. Wallaby Mat Rogers last month agreed a two-year deal with the club once his current contract with the Australian Rugby Union expires after next year's World Cup.
