Buoyant Leinster hit the hapless Borders for nine tries as the home side routed their opponents 62-14 in the Celtic League at Donnybrook.

Boosted by eight of their starters from last Sunday's vital Heineken Cup win in Bath, the Irish province ran riot with Gary Brown (three), Bryce Williams, Felipe Contepomi, Denis Hickie, Rob Kearney, John Hepworth and replacement Niall Ronan all getting in on the act.

Contepomi topped off a landmark day in his household - his wife Paula gave birth to a baby girl earlier today - by slotting seven conversions and a penalty for a personal haul of 22 points.

Borders had little to offer and could only count on two second quarter tries from winger Nikki Walker by the finish.

Argentinian star Contepomi was central to all that was good about Leinster's play in the opening half - he put Kiwi lock Williams over for the opening try on two minutes. Contepomi converted, kicked a penalty and threw a neat dummy on 18
minutes to grab a try of his own.

That score pushed the Puma through the 400-point barrier in his Leinster career, and Michael Cheika's side were bubbling nicely.

The Scots then made their presence felt by scoring a breakaway try. Ben MacDougall took it up, Brendan McKerchar peeled off a ruck and put Walker over
to the left of the posts. Charlie Hore converted for a 17-7 deficit.

Although Walker was sent in again by the efforts of Calum MacRae and Garry Law after Contepomi had been intercepted on 39 minutes, Leinster still led 36-14 at the break with winger Brown (25, 28 minutes) and axed Ireland star Hickie (33) having touched down.

Hickie was one of six players dropped from Eddie O'Sullivan's Ireland squad for next weekend's RBS 6 Nations opener against Italy, and he duly proved a point with a punchy performance and his 50th try in Leinster colours.

The province's fifth win in six games was done and dusted, but Leinster's lightning backs were still in the mood for tries.

Hickie danced past Walker on 50 minutes to put Brown over for his third try.

As Borders' heads dropped, tries followed for Rob Kearney, Niall Ronan and centre John Hepworth, the former Leeds and Castleford rugby league player who was registering his first try for Leinster.
