Geordan Murphy's hopes of representing the Lions against New Zealand next Saturday look to have been dashed.
Murphy, who was pushing hard for a test place after some impressive performances, has been named in the midweek side to tackle Southland and boss Clive Woodward has already said that none of the 22 involved on Tuesday will feature on Saturday.
That also means disappointment for Denis Hickie, Ronan O'Gara, John Hayes, Donnacha O'Callaghan, Simon Easterby and Gordon D'Arcy.
Gavin Henson is another high profile name to be selected for Tuesday and it now looks like Will Greenwood or Jonny Wilkinson will partner Brian O'Driscoll in the centre against the All-Blacks.
England World Cup winner Greenwood produced an impressive try-scoring display in the victory over Otago yesterday, a performance which clearly thrust him into Woodward's thought process.
Another more contentious option though would be to switch Wilkinson from fly-half and hand Welsh Grand Slam hero Stephen Jones the number 10 jersey.
Ryan Jones, who produced a man-of-the-match contribution on his Lions debut against Otago, is now on course to make the Test 22, with the back row to face Southland comprising of Lewis Moody, Martyn Williams and Michael Owen.
Williams' selection suggests that 36-year-old Neil Back will start against the All Blacks, making him the oldest Test player who has started a tour in Lions history.
Woodward has named four backs on the bench, including England's Charlie Hodgson, while the forward replacements include Simon Easterby and Andrew Sheridan, who both had outside hopes of making the Test 22.
Elsewhere, Wales scrum-half Gareth Cooper will make his first start of the tour, and there is also a reappearance after a fortnight in the wilderness for England wing Mark Cueto.
Henson's selection for what should be a relatively straightforward midweek encounter is the big shock though, especially as Woodward had talked him up during the last few days.
