Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan admits Saturday's RBS 6 Nations clash with Wales could be the current squad's swansong before it is dismantled.
Veterans such as Reggie Corrigan, Shane Byrne and Anthony Foley are reaching the twilight of their careers and the crunch showdown at the Millennium Stadium could be their final international outing.
"It's a reasonable proposition to think this might be the last time we see this squad together. Age means some players are nearing the end of their Test careers," said O'Sullivan.
"After the Lions tour it will be time for less experienced players to make the transition into Test rugby, but we have to make sure the players we are bringing in are better than who we have at the moment."
Those Irish players nearing the end of their international shelf life could ask for few better settings than Saturday's potential Six Nations decider for their Test farewell.
Brian O'Driscoll and Co can still win the Six Nations title and have an excellent chance of retaining their Triple Crown given their proud 22-year unbeaten record in Cardiff.
