Ireland boss Eddie O'Sullivan is counting on Dennis Hickie to make a major impact against South Africa tomorrow, and insists that the winger's injury problems are behind him.

Hickie missed Ireland's last eight Tests after rupturing his Achilles tendon against during last year's World Cup and there were concerns the he would never reclaim the lightning pace that has become a trademark of his game.

However, since his rehabilitation, Hickie has settled back into the game and his performances for Leinster in the Heineken Cup and Celtic League suggest that he is close to top form again.

O'Sullivan said: "Being an out-and-out speedster, the big question for Dennis was would he get his speed back after suffering what is an horrific injury for a sprinter."

"But anyone who has watched him play for Leinster can see he has his pace back. He's on top of his game at the moment and it's good to have him back."

"He doesn't seem to have lost anything from last year which is an amazing achievement given the nature of his injury and the position he plays. All credit to himself and the medics."

The player himself is delighted with his return to form and said: "When you have a long injury like that you never quite know what is going to happen at the other end, so I'm delighted I've been given the chance to play for Ireland again."
