IRFU present Minister with new Lansdowne proposal

A delegation from the IRFU, led by chief executive Philip Browne, met the Minister for Sport, John O'Donoghue TD today, and presented him with a proposal for a new 50,000 all seater stadium at Lansdowne Road.

The IRFU had commissioned independent consultants Ove Arup to carry out a feasibility study on six sites and they were asked to put forward their recommendation for a new home for Irish rugby.

The project would cost in the region of E250 and would see the existing structure being knocked to the ground with the new stadium being rebuilt, with the same layout.

As there are houses at both the north and south ends of the ground, a single tiered stand is suggested for those locations.

The proposal has been referred to the office of public works, for consideration. A further meeting will take place between the minister, the IRFU and the FAI next week.
