Former Wallaby coach Greg Smith has died in a Sydney hospital from a brain tumour. Smith, who was 52, leaves behind two daughters and his wife, who was by his side as he passed away.
ARU managing director John O'Neill said "On behalf of Australian Rugby I want to pay tribute to Greg for his contribution to rugby both at the club level and at a state level where he coached the Waratahs very successfully and of course as the national coach in 1996 and 1997. He was a great family man and an extraordinarily proud Australian."
Smith was in charge of the Aussies for two seasons, before illness forced him to step down in 1998. Under his charge, Australia won 12 of their 19 tests and went on a 12-game undefeated during their 1996 tour of Europe.
